What to Look for in a Dog Grooming Trailer

October 17, 2019

So you've decided to start a mobile dog wash business and you're looking around to buy your first dog wash trailer. But what is it exactly that you should be looking out for? It can be overwhelming for any first-time trailer buyer, so read on to discover the top 5 questions you should be considering when searching for trailers.

1. Does it come with the necessary equipment?

There are certain pieces of equipment that are essential for any dog wash business. To name some obvious ones: a water tap, a grooming table, a bathtub. As you look around as a prospective buyer, ask yourself if the trailer is fitted out with the essential pieces of equipment. It may be cheaper initially to purchase a bare bones trailer with nothing in it, but once you go purchase the equipment yourself, it will likely end up more expensive and time-consuming.

Here at Bayswater Custom Trailers, our dog wash trailers come ready to go. All you have to do is pick it up and move in your personal equipment. Our trailers come with a bathtub with an adjustable shelf (to cater for smaller dogs), an instant hot water system, an electronic grooming table, multiple power points, a blower dryer, the option to add in an air-conditioning unit, and much more. By giving our clients a fully functional and ready-to-go product, they can focus more on running their business and less on worrying about fitting out their trailer. By purchasing a trailer that is already well equipped, you can get rid of some of the stress that comes with setting up a new business.

2. Does it have adequate storage space?

A mobile dog wash business is run on the road, so you need to have enough space to store all your essentials (e.g. shampoos, clippers, etc.). At the same time, you don't want the interior of your trailer to feel cramped and claustrophobic as a result of storing too many things inside. Our trailers come with two long shelves inside the trailer where you can store all your products and equipment. These shelves are big enough to fit a 5L bottles of product, and our previous customers have found that they provide more than enough space to store their day-to-day essentials. As you're researching trailers, ask yourself if you can realistically work with the space provided. If you're already feeling cramped, then it's a sign that that particular trailer is not for you.

3. Is it easy to maintain and will it last?

Technically two questions, but they're interlinked. Our trailers are made from fibreglass, which is an extremely durable material that's perfectly suited for the outdoors. We explained the benefits of fibreglass in a previous blog article which you can check out if you have time. In regards to maintenance, if you diligently follow the care instructions, then you shouldn't have any problems.

As you're doing your research, you will probably come across some metal dog wash trailers that sell for a significantly lower price than fibreglass trailers. However, it's worth asking yourself how long you're hoping for it to last. If you're happy to buy a cheaper trailer that you'll have to replace within a few years, then go for the metal trailers. But if you're not wanting to have to replace your trailer, then look into longer-lasting materials such as fibreglass.

4. Will it brand my business effectively?

A good trailer should work as a mobile advertising billboard for your business. A well-branded trailer provides a business with amazing exposure and with amazing marketing opportunities. As you're researching different companies and producers, see if they'll provide you with enough flexibility with branding. We give our clients the freedom to choose from a wide range of colours and we involve them in designing the exterior decals so that the trailer is perfect for their business.

5. Will it put dogs at ease?

As we all know, whilst some dogs don't mind a trip to the groomers, other dogs very much do. For some dogs, these trips can cause a lot of anxiety and stress. For this reason, it's important to consider whether or not a trailer has taken into account the psychology of dogs. Our trailers have been designed to put our furry friends at ease. We have included a ramp that will allow a dog to walk into the trailer independently, a bathtub shelf that will ensure that smaller dogs don't feel overwhelmed by the tub, windows to provide natural lighting and fresh air, non-slip flooring to prevent falls and slips, and ample internal space so that dogs don't feel cramped. From huskies to chihuahuas, all dogs will feel comfortable, confident, and at ease in our trailers.
